Edward Corbet

Biography

Of Merton College Oxford and (later) Magdalen College, then rector of Chartham (Kent) and Great Haseley (Oxon). Corbet served on the parliamentary visitation of Oxford (1647-48), one of the visitors who oversaw the ejection of royalist heads of house and the installation of Reformed replacements. He contributed steadily to the Westminster Assembly's later sessions in the catechetical phase. His fast sermon Gods Providence (1642) defended the parliamentary cause from Romans 13. He died in 1658.

The great majority of the sitting members were English parish ministers of Presbyterian conviction. They formed the drafting core of the Assembly, manning its three standing committees and supplying most of the text of the Confession, the two Catechisms, and the Directory for Public Worship.
