Savoy Declaration

3.1. Of God's Eternal Decree

God from all eternity did by the most wise and holy counsel of his own will, freely and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass: yet so, as thereby neither is God the author of sin, nor is violence offered to the will of the creatures, nor is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather established.

Proof texts

For discussion

  1. The Assembly cited Eph. 1:11 in support of this answer. Read it in context — how does it bear on what is claimed here?
  2. 11 passages are cited here. Which does the most work, and is anything claimed that the proofs do not obviously carry?
  3. WCF 3.1 treats the same ground. What does it add, and why might it put things differently?
