Savoy Declaration

28.1. Of the Sacraments

Sacraments are holy signs and seals of the covenant of grace, immediately instituted by Christ, to represent him and his benefits, and to confirm our interest in him, and solemnly to engage us to the service of God in Christ, according to his Word.

Proof texts

For discussion

  1. The Assembly cited Rom. 4:11 in support of this answer. Read it in context — how does it bear on what is claimed here?
  2. 12 passages are cited here. Which does the most work, and is anything claimed that the proofs do not obviously carry?
  3. WCF 27.1 treats the same ground. What does it add, and why might it put things differently?
