Heidelberg Catechism

Q63. But do our good works earn nothing, even though God promises to reward them in this life and the next?

This reward is not earned; it is a gift of grace.

Matt. 5:12 — [12] Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Heb. 11:6 — [6] And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Luke 17:10 — [10] So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’”
2 Tim. 4:7-8 — [7] I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. [8] Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
