HC 22
Heidelberg Catechism
Q22. What, then, must a Christian believe?
All that is promised us in the Gospel, which the articles of our catholic and undoubted Christian faith teach us in a summary.
Proof texts
- Matt. 28:19 — [19] Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
- John 20:30-31 — [30] Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; [31] but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
For discussion
- The Assembly cited Matt. 28:19 in support of this answer. Read it in context — how does it bear on what is claimed here?
- 2 passages are cited here. Which does the most work, and is anything claimed that the proofs do not obviously carry?
- WSC Q4 treats the same ground. What does it add, and why might it put things differently?
- WSC Q5 treats the same ground. What does it add, and why might it put things differently?
