Thomas Hill

Master of Emmanuel then Trinity Cambridge; preacher of the parliamentary fast sermons.

Biography

Educated at Emmanuel College Cambridge under William Bedell, Hill was named to the Assembly in 1643. Briefly Master of Emmanuel from 1645 before Tuckney succeeded him, he moved to Trinity College Cambridge in 1645 (replacing Thomas Comber) and held the lodging there until his death. He preached at least seven of the parliamentary fast sermons (1642-1648) and was a frequent Assembly speaker on procedure and on the worship debates; Six Sermons (1649) is the principal published collection. He was an active member of the catechetical committee under Tuckney. Died at Trinity Lodge in December 1653.

English Presbyterian divine

The great majority of the sitting members were English parish ministers of Presbyterian conviction. They formed the drafting core of the Assembly, manning its three standing committees and supplying most of the text of the Confession, the two Catechisms, and the Directory for Public Worship.
