John Wincop

d. 1647

Rector of Ellesworth; chaplain to the Earl of Holland.

Biography

Of Christ's College Cambridge, then Ellesworth in Cambridgeshire and chaplain to Henry Rich, 1st Earl of Holland (one of the wavering Court peers who returned to the king's side late in the war). Wincop served on the catechetical committee from its earliest sessions and was a quiet but steady contributor through the main sessions. He preached the parliamentary fast sermon Israels Preservation (1645). Died in October 1647 before the Catechisms' final approval.
